To Know Our Trees: A Vital Responsibility for Today and the Future with John Kress
The five years that scientist W. John Kress spent writing his 2024 book, Smithsonian Trees of North America, were the warmest on record as a result of human activities. The lack of respect and disregard for the natural world by a significant segment of our society has never been greater, especially over the last 300 years. John’s book and this talk are aimed at helping us regain a relationship and respect for nature through our connection to trees.
John is distinguished scientist and curator emeritus at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and a former visiting scholar at Dartmouth. Documented in 15 books and 300 scientific and popular papers, his research is focused on plant evolution, conservation, and biodiversity. He received his BA from Harvard University and his PhD from Duke University. naturalhistory.si.edu/staff/john-kress

Mini-Forest Revolution with Hannah Lewis
What holds hundreds of species, sequesters more than 300 pounds of CO2/year, is several degrees cooler than its surroundings, soaks up lots of rainwater, and is co-created by children and their elders in spaces no bigger than a tennis court? A “mini-forest” planted using the Miyawaki Method, of course. Writer Hannah Lewis will discuss what a mini-forest is, what goes into planting one, and why people all over the world are organizing their communities to plant mini-forests in the small spaces around where they live and work.
Hannah is the author of the 2022 Mini-Forest Revolution: Using the Miyawaki Method to Rapidly Rewild the World, which won the 2023 Nautilus Book Award and has been translated into French, German, and Italian. Hannah has an MS in sustainable agriculture and sociology from Iowa State University and a BA in environmental studies from Middlebury College. She lives in Minneapolis, where she works for the non-profit Renewing the Countryside to build sustainable local and regional food systems and plant mini-forests. www.hannahlewis.org

Design Steps and Considerations for an Ecological Landscape with Krystyna Oszkinis
Guiding you through her design process, local landscape designer Krystyna Oszkinis will highlight the ecological landscaping principles she considers when assessing various garden settings. She will outline the steps she takes to create a new garden or renovate an existing space—from the client’s initial garden inquiry to planting day. Krystyna will also share some of her favorite plants that serve as “problem solvers” for common gardening challenges in the Upper Valley, such as clay soil and deer pressure.
Krystyna is the co-owner and lead designer of Rooted Gardens. Together with her husband, Matt—who leads the company’s electric lawn care team—they provide landscaping services that increase biodiversity, reduce fossil fuel reliance, and decrease the noise pollution typically associated with land care. Krystyna studied environmental studies and studio art at Dartmouth and has spent the last decade passionately tending outdoor spaces to enhance human interaction with the natural world. myrootedgardens.com

Ben is a product manager at Johnny’s Selected Seeds, managing vegetables, mushrooms, and fruits. He has been with the company for over 10 years, first as a commercial farmer working seasonally in its contact center and then moving to the pepper breeding program. Before joining Johnny’s, Ben was a market gardener for 10 years growing vegetables, flowers, and herbs. He studied biology at the University of Maine at Augusta. Daniel works on Johnny's Research Team, coordinating mushroom and other crop trials, collecting data, and analyzing results. Gertrude Jekyll and Her Influence with Suzanne Dworsky
Gertrude Jekyll (1843–1920) was without doubt the most influential and prolific landscape designer of her time, creating more than 400 gardens in England alone. Even today, garden designers are indebted to her style, color sense, and environmental awareness. Landscape architect Suzanne Dworsky will present six gardens that Jekyll designed in whole or in part, starting with her own garden, Munstead Wood, and culminating, at the end of her life, with her masterpiece Hestercombe House, designed together with architect Edward Lutyens. Suzanne will also discuss several gardens influenced by Jekyll.
Over her multi-discipline career, Suzanne practiced urban design and landscape architecture before turning to photography in 1977. She has participated in international solo and group exhibitions, and her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Victoria and Albert Museum, Bibliothèque National, and Stanford University Museum, among others. She attended Barnard College and earned an MLA from Harvard University. A dedicated gardener, Suzanne is still working happily in her Tunbridge garden at age 96.

Historic Preservation Through a Garden Lens with Diana Kimball-Anderson
Outdoor spaces should not only be beautiful, but also sustainable and environmentally responsible. Preservationist Diana Kimball-Anderson believes the best way forward is to look to the past. In this presentation, she will review the various historical plant varieties, ancient techniques, and long-term planning that contribute to today’s garden paradise. She'll also discuss her past work at the University of Virginia’s Morven Farm (Thomas Jefferson’s “Indian Camp”) and Enfield Shaker Gardens as well as her current work with the Woodstock Foundation.
With a degree in history, Diana started on the path to graduate study in historic preservation before realizing she was more interested in re-creating Alexander Pope’s Grotto than in the Flatiron Building. This led her to seek courses across the pond where horticulture, landscape, and history combine more readily than they do in the US. For the past 20 years, she has worked for museums, historic sites, and private clients restoring gardens and returning plant varieties to the soil where they once grew. preservationgardening.com

Your Neighborhood Botanical Conservatory: Growing the World’s Flora for You with Dana Ozimek
Dartmouth’s Life Sciences Greenhouse is home to 1,400 species of plants that represent some truly fascinating and beautiful parts of the plant kingdom. The living collection contains more than 50 endangered species and has been curated to help educate our community about many aspects of the plant sciences. Dana Ozimek, botanical horticulturist and assistant greenhouse manager, will share details about intriguing species, growing tips on how to care for a wide range of plants, and examples of how modern botanical conservatories are protecting the world’s flora.
Dana studied botany and sustainable landscape horticulture at the University of Vermont and has worked for more than 20 years in a wide variety of horticultural settings. Her time working in commercial horticulture and the research department of Longwood Gardens helped her find her true calling of caring for diverse botanical collections as a botanical horticulturist at UVM and UConn before joining Dartmouth. Dana is passionate about growing rare, unusual, and endangered plants and helping foster stronger human-plant relations. www.dartmouth.edu/greenhouse

Succulents! Hypertufa Workshop at the HGC Greenhouse (for Members)
The Succulent Interest Group is sharing their knowledge of making Hypertufa pots with other Members during two sessions on Thursday, 9/14. What’s Hypertufa? It looks like stone, but is made of cement, peat moss and vermiculite, so it's lighter than it looks. The pots can be small or large, depending on the mold one uses. The two part mold can be plastic bowls, cardboard boxes, or even a plastic bag. Google “Hypertufa” to learn more. There will be a morning and afternoon session, each limited to 6 people. We ask that you bring a two part mold, if possible, and $5 for materials. Sign up at this secure page (Members know the Password). More info will be sent to participants soon, and it's as easy as making mud pies!

Playing God in the Meadow: How I Learned to Admire My Weeds with Martha Molnar
New York City transplant Martha Molnar tells the informative and wryly humorous story of a couple’s attempts to transform a dying apple orchard into a large native meadow on a Vermont hilltop. As she and her husband yank, slash, pull, haul, and chop their way through hot summers, Martha begins to understand that they are in for a protracted war with non-native plants that will likely end in détente. The implications for the future of native habitats everywhere are played out on their tiny dot of earth.
An avid gardener and outdoors enthusiast, Martha is the author of Playing God in the Meadow and Taproot: Coming Home to Prairie Hill. She haswritten for the New York Times, the Boston Globe, Mother Earth News, and Horticulture, Northern Woodlands, and GreenMountain Club magazines and was a regular commentator on Vermont Public Radio. Currently at work on a book about seeds, Martha spent most of her professional career in media/public relations and marketing. marthalebmolnar.com
