Healthy Forests Series at the Howe: Session 2

Seeing the Forest for the Trees: Declining Biodiversity in Upper Valley Forests

Session 2: Oh Deer: Impact of Deer on Upper Valley Forests

Wednesday, May 1, 6-7:30 PM in the Howe Library Mayer Room

Mayer Room at the Howe Library

The speakers will discuss the role of state hunting rules, how hunters can keep the deer herd at a reasonable level.  Speakers will answer some of these questions:

How do we know what the density of deer is, and what is the ‘tipping’ point where deer do damage to our forests?

Are there changes in hunting rules and/or hunting practices that help reduce deer density?

How can individuals and all landowners help reduce deer pressure on our wild areas?

Do we have enough hunters?

Creating a Backyard Pollinator Haven by Erin Zagadailov

Erin will provide simple tips and tricks that you can implement in your own home garden to attract pollinators and promote pollinator conservation. She will provide an overview of her favorite pollinator-friendly perennials and garden must-haves for growing in Zones 4/5. After her talk, she’ll have locally grown cut tulip bouquets for sale.

Dr. Erin Zagadailov is the founder and creator of Lady Grantham Apiary, a bees-first flower farm in Grantham, NH, with a mission to promote pollinator conservation and locally grown flowers. Taking a sabbatical from biotech, she is a pharmacist and health economist with expertise in developing and commercializing treatments for oncology and rare diseases. Seeing the Forest for the Trees: Declining Biodiversity in Upper Valley Forests

Session 3: (Open) Space Invaders: How Invasive Plants Threaten Biodiversity

May 22, 6-7:30 PM, Howe Library Mayer Room

Deer overbrowse allows aggressive non-native plants that deer don’t eat to invade our forests. These non-native plants impact wildlife habitat and diversity on the forest understory. Some plant invaders are not easy to remove. Speakers will discuss how to plan, prioritize, budget and recruit public support for efforts in removing these invaders. The question of what will replace these invaders will be addressed.

Houseplant Repotting Workshop (Members Only)

Spring is the time to repot houseplants. Sometimes it is a two person job and always it is messy. On Saturday, April 27th from 10am-2pm and Sunday, April 28th from 10am to noon, you can make the mess at the HGC Greenhouse and get help from fellow plant lovers. The Club will provide the soil (general, succulent and orchid). You bring your houseplants that need repotting/dividing/pruning.

This workshop is outside, so dress appropriately for the day. The Club has some plastic pots, but bring your own pots, particularly large ones, if you can. Frequently participants share extra plants or leave plants behind which might be potted up for the Plant Sale, but that is not the purpose of this workshop.

For questions or more information see the email dated March 25 in your inbox, if you’d like to become a Member to participate visit this page.

Fertile Minds: Children Belong in the Garden by Lara Litchfield-Kimber

Gardens are incredible learning landscapes—especially for children. Gardening encourages the development of critical early learning skills in young children. For older students, gardens provide dynamic learning environments in which to explore math, science, history, and culture. This presentation invites you to reimagine traditional gardens as powerful living classrooms.

Lara Litchfield-Kimber earned her BA from Amherst College and her MS from Cornell University. Formally trained in the agricultural sciences as a plant pathologist, Lara left research and teaching to become an entrepreneur, starting Fertile Minds, Inc., an informal science education group in Ithaca, NY, that developed children’s gardens to teach math and science. She joined the science center field in 2004 at Ithaca’s Science Center and later served as the executive director of the Mid-Hudson Children’s Museum in Poughkeepsie, NY, for nine years before coming to the Upper Valley in January 2022 to assume the role of executive director of the Montshire Museum of Science. Learn more at www.montshire.org.

Living In the Liberated Landscape by Larry Weaner

Living In the Liberated Landscape by Larry Weaner

All too often in our gardens and landscapes we think of static compositions of carefully placed and managed plants. But our approach can be more dynamic—and arguably more rewarding—than that by taking advantage of plants’ natural abilities to reproduce and proliferate. Learn how Larry combines design with the reproductive abilities of plants as well as ecological processes to create compelling, ever-evolving landscapes that bring new meaning to partnering with nature. Using examples from his own property as well as diverse client projects, Larry will share how this give-and-take approach can result in compelling, low-maintenance landscapes that free plants to perform according to their natural abilities and liberate people from having to cater to their landscapes’ every need.

Larry Weaner, FAPLD, president and founder of Larry Weaner Landscape Associates, established New Directions in the American Landscape in 1990. He is nationally recognized for combining expertise in horticulture, landscape design, and ecological restoration. Profiled in national publications, his design and restoration work spans more than 20 US states and the UK. His book Garden Revolution: How Our Landscapes Can Be a Source of Environmental Change (2016) received an American Horticultural Society (AHS) Book Award in 2017. In 2021 Larry received the AHS Landscape Design Award and the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) Award of Distinction. www.ndal.org | lweanerdesign.com

Early Garden Photography: Glass Lantern Slides by Joyce Connolly

Garden photography hasn’t always been as easy as point-and-shoot on your cell phone. Learn about the one-of-a-kind hand-tinted glass lantern slides that were crafted a century ago to document gardens and tell their stories. These fragile lantern slides—the PowerPoint presentations of their day—were used to educate audiences about garden history and design.

Joyce Connolly has been a museum specialist with Smithsonian Gardens’ Collections, Education, and Access branch since 1999. She helps manage the Archives of American Gardens (AAG), a repository that collects and preserves documentation relating to thousands of historic and contemporary gardens across the US. This documentation is used by writers, scholars, preservationists, and others to tell stories about the natural and built environments, horticulture, plants, history, art, science, design, and culture. Prior to joining the Smithsonian, she was an archives specialist at the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site in Brookline, MA, for several years. Learn more at www.gardens.si.edu.

We will make prints on fabric or paper in a variety of sizes using flowers, plants, and any other botanical trinkets you'd like to bring from home. Natural items like feathers, leaves, and stones will work well, but you are welcome to bring anything that can cast a decent shadow! Paper wrappers, crushed soda cans, and other found objects are welcome. All levels welcome, beginners especially encouraged. Ages 14 & up. Materials provided!

Instructor: Emil O’Melia is a teaching artist from Baltimore, MD. They have taught all sorts of arts & crafts to youth, teens, and adults. Nowadays, you can find Emil printmaking, cartooning, designing, or investigating haunted places in White River Junction.

This program is free and open to all within the 15-person limit at the HGC Greenhouse. Please register via email: hclubweb@gmail.com. Students may register for one, two, or all three sessions of 2-hour cyanotype classes. Each of the three sessions will welcome beginners, while inviting returning students to build on their previous work by experimenting with different layers and materials. You are welcome to sign up for one, two, or all three dates!

‘Kiss the Ground’ Narrated by Woody Harrelson

To significantly mitigate the climate crisis, humans need to solve a lot of problems. As this 2020 Netflix documentary suggests, one of the biggest problems is right under our feet: the soil. By regenerating the world’s soils, Kiss the Ground reveals that we can completely and rapidly stabilize Earth’s climate, restore lost ecosystems, and create abundant food supplies.

Using compelling graphics and visuals, along with striking NASA and NOAA footage, the film artfully illustrates how, by drawing down atmospheric carbon, soil is the missing piece of the climate puzzle. Narrated by actor Woody Harrelson and featuring science experts and celebrity activists, the film explains why transitioning to “regenerative agriculture” has the potential to balance our climate, replenish our vast water supplies, and feed the world. Woody Harrelson is an American actor and playwright. A three-time Academy Award and four-time Golden Globe Award nominee, he is best known for his roles in Cheers, True Detective, and The Hunger Games. Woody is also an outspoken environmentalist and is especially concerned about deforestation.

This adult program is part of a series produced by the Hanover Garden Club in partnership with the Montshire Museum of Science located in Norwich, Vermont. It will be held both in person (with yummy refreshments made by our members!) and via Zoom.
