A Thing of Beauty Is a Joy Forever: Japanese Gardens by Nancy Stevens

  • Montshire Museum of Science One Montshire Road Norwich, NH 05055 United States (map)

The importance of gardens to the Japanese, how they use them, the different types, and the techniques employed to make them the works of art they undoubtedly are will be the focus of Nancy’s talk. She will answer the burning questions you have always wanted answered, such as why Japanese gardeners of the 15th century were “untouchables,” what is the wandering stream banquet, what is the connection with saki, why are Japanese bridges so high and arched, and which temple was burned down in 1950 by a mad monk—and much more besides.

Nancy Stevens is a retired journalist with a passion for plants, gardens, and the natural world. She is a past chairman of Baldernock Gardening Club, a very lively club in Glasgow (Scotland, not Kentucky) for seven years, judge at local flower shows, panel member on gardeners’ forums, and a speaker with extensive Zoom experience both at home and overseas, from California to Melbourne, Australia.

This adult program is produced in partnership with the Montshire Museum Science and offered free to the public.
